He was a founding member of the Vereinigten Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk in 1897 (United Workshops for Art in Crafts) and the Deutscher Werkbund (1907), from 1912 to 1924 he headed
the art school in Munich (which was incorporated in 1946 in the Academy) and from 1926 to 1931 as professor and Director of the
Cologne Werkschulen (litterally factory schools).
Riemerschmid, influenced by the English Arts and Crafts Movement, was not only an architect. He designed also furniture, wallpaper, fabrics and articles
made of glass and porcelain. He often worked with Joseph Maria Olbrich, and with his friend and colleague Bruno Paul.
